Comparative Sorption of Diatomic Oxyanions onto HDTMA-Br Modified Kaolinite Clay

Abstract

The adsorption isotherms and kinetic models were tested on the comparative sorption of oxyanions onto hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-Br) surfactant modified kaolinite clay also known as organo-kaolinite clay. The percentage removal of sulphate ion sorption was 40.42% and 78.13% onto MMC and BMC respectively, while chromate ion sorption was 26.72% and 58.62% onto MMC and BMC respectively. Thus, sulphate ion sorption shows better removal compared to chromate ion sorption of 33.60% and 24.97% onto MMC and BMC respectively. Langmuir and Frumkin isotherm models best described the adsorptive mechanism, hence the validity of the Langmuir-type separation factor RL (0<RL<1) was highly favourable and acceptable while the Frumkin isotherm gave the best regression correlation R2 although sulphate ion sorption responded better than the chromate ion sorption. The initial adsorption rate 'α' and the extent of surface coverage 'β' was higher on sulphate ion sorption compared to chromate ion sorption. In general the models tested predicts exothermic and chemisorption processes.

Abstract

The large current development of aerospace and automotive technologies is based on the use of composite materials which provide significant weight savings compared to their mechanical characteristics. Correct dimensioning of composite structures requires a thorough knowledge of their behavior in small as in large deflection.This work aims to simulate linear and nonlinear behavior of laminates composites under three-point bending test. The used modelization is based on first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT), classical plate theory (CPT) and Von-Karman's equations for large deflection. A differential equation of Riccati, describing the variation of the deflection depending on the load, was obtained. Hence, the results deduced show a good correlation with experimental curves

The transformed governing equations are numerically solved by using the Galerkin method. We have studied both stationary convection and oscillatory convection.----

Evidence for Long-Lasting Electrical Leader Discharges in Non-Specular Meteor Trails Observed In the Summer Polar Upper Mesosphere

Abstract

Unusual, non-specular, fast-movingmeteortrail echoes are observed in the summer polar upper mesosphere near 90 km.Usually, at mid-latitudes, field-aligned irregularities cause non-specular trails, while in the polar region long-lasting irregularities are possibly sustained by charged meteor dust.The unusual meteor trails propagate downward and upward at speeds of 3.3-6.4 kms-1 along a slanted path length of 10.4 km between 87-93 km altitudes, merging in the middle and lasting for 8-10s. Here we propose that an electrical discharge is responsible for these trails. The corresponding horizontal electric field for the observed speeds is estimated up to 16.3 Vm-1 at 90 km.Both the long-lasting merging of two fast-moving plasma trails and the modest speed compared to those (~104-105 ms-1) of lightning leader process and of jets (< 400 ms) occurring above thunderclouds likely suggest a new type of meteor-trail leader discharge occurring in the summer polar upper mesosphere.

Abstract

Contemporary businesses are surrounded by socio-cultural, economic and environmental complexities, which influence their productivity and organizational image. This scenario demands an interdisciplinary management vision able to: cater to the economic necessity that sustains the actual capitalist logic; offer products which are socially responsible, environmentally conscientious and culturally compatible with the socio-organizational reality. Such positions have become fundamental in a society that witnesses innumerable negative impacts that distort or extinguish economic systems, ecosystems, social values and cultural identities. In this sense, this assignment enhances that the sustainable management is constituted by complexes actions that illuminate their environmental, cultural, economic, social and political responsibilities. Nevertheless, through a quant-qualitative analysis ruled by the elaboration of three bibliometric studies, it was planned to present the degree of commitment of the tourism and hotel industry in regard to the social, cultural, economic, political and environmental dimensions inherent in the proposals for sustainable development. What is observable, is that the contemporary hotel and/or tourism management has a predisposition to environmental and/or social external actions, and is not capable of establishing a participative planning to balance all the sustainability dimensions. The aforementioned scenario corroborates the necessity of establishing holistic criteria, which also contemplate the intergenerational solidarity.

Conceptualization of a Domain Specific Simulator for Requirements Prioritization

Abstract

This paper conceptualizes a domain specific simulator for requirements prioritization; its aims at helping to identify appropriate prioritization strategies for a project in hand. The possible existing scenarios are difficult to analyze; they involve different variables, like the selection of: stakeholders (their availability, expertise, and importance); prioritization criteria; and prioritization methods. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed simulator elements, a well established general purpose simulator, called Arena, was used. The results demonstrate that, it is possible to build the suggested scenarios in order to study and make inferences about the prioritization strategies.
